The Sutherland Shire is located 28km south of the City of Sydney. It is an area with wonderful geographic advantages.
Its northern boundary is historic Botany Bay - the birthplace of modern Australia. Its eastern boundary is the Pacific Ocean with long stretches of golden beaches; its southern boundary is within the 150 sq.kms Royal National Park, the second oldest national park in the world. To the west the Shire's boundary is Deadman Creek, which goes through large tracts of bushland before flowing into the Georges River. Within the boundaries, too, to the south-west is the 23sq.kms Heathcote National Park.
The Sutherland Shire covers an area of 370sq.kms and its population is 215,000. The Shire is traversed from the east, towards the west, by Port Hacking and the Hacking River whose numerous bays, and channels are idyllic. Water sports proliferate.
Woronora River, from its mouth on the Georges River, traverses the Shire southwards, providing yet more waterfront frontages for the shire homeowners. Sutherland Shire is the southern-most local government area of the Sydney region and is administrated by Sutherland Shire Council. The current Mayor is Councillor Phil Blight.
